Healing Touch is a holistic approach to influencing the energy system in the body which supports physical, mental, emotional and spiritual life. It is an energy therapy that uses touch to influence the human energy system, specifically the energy field that surrounds the body, and the energy centers that control the energy flow from the energy field to the physical body. This non-invasive technique uses the hands to clear, energize, and balance the human energy field thus affecting physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health and healing. It is based on a heart-centred caring relationship in which the practitioner and client come together energetically to facilitate the client’s health and healing.
Goal of Healing Touch
The goal in Healing Touch is to restore harmony and balance in the energy system, and ultimately placing the client in a position to self-heal. Healing Touch complements conventional health care and is used in collaboration with other approaches to health and healing.
Philosophical Assumptions of the Body and Healing
Healing Touch is a philosophy, a way of caring, and a sacred healing art. It does not recommend or require a specific religious orientation or organized religious system. Healing touch practitioners operate from a variety of beliefs. The ability to facilitate healing in another is inherent in anyone who desires to help another with sincere intent to heal.
The assumption underlying this therapeutic approach is that the person has a physical body and a subtle body comprised of many layers of energy. People also have energy centres called chakras, which form the interface between the layers of the energy field and the physical body. These connect with “meridians” which intersect through the entire body and relate to the nervous and endocrine systems. Thus the energy system is comprised of three major parts: the energy field (aura), the energy centres (chakras) and the energy tracts (meridians).
With this model, the energy system reflects health and illness. Imbalances in the energy system often occur before the manifestation of physical symptoms. Working with the energy system can directly assist in a person’s self-healing.
