San Felipe in the state of Baja California in Mexico is a little fishing village on the northeast coast of the Baja peninsula, on the Sea of Cortez. It’s just a little fishing village as well as being the biggest town there is for miles.
And talking of sheer size, California USA is a big state – 770 miles long to be precise. And I was stunned to learn that Baja California Mexico is even longer at 775 miles.. I had no idea. It stretches from Mexicali on the border with the USA on its eastern border, Tijuana on the west coast and Cabo San Lucas is on the very tip.
The scary news about Mexico recently doesn’t seem to apply here and I needn’t have worried about the safety of this part of Mexico. I’m sure there is trouble – there’s trouble everywhere… But I haven’t seen it here any more than at home in Victoria (also BC!) or Calgary. People from San Felipe, Baja California are warm and friendly and not one of the many Canadian and American travellers and settlers I’ve met here have anything but tales of generosity and kindness to tell.
This part of the Baja is under-developed with potholed roads and few man-made luxuries. However, I grew up in the desert so this feels like home to me! It’s a heaven for dirt bikers, other off-road vehicle and dune buggy enthusiasts. Sports fishing and drinking tequila is also popular! The Baja is famous for its off-road races. I’ve also never seen so many stray dogs and cats wandering about freely?!
The weather in San Felipe Baja California has been pretty cold and windy here (freezing!?) with a couple of mildly warm and sunny days here and there… Until last week when the freezing weather turned absolutely gorgeous! I’m surrounded by good friends and a couple of great workmen and I am renovating the inside of the GypsyScribe, wandering the desert and taking sunrise photos.
I also have someone making new cushion covers for the sofa in the motorhome and hopefully – if the translator in my computer was accurate! – he will also be making Oreo some little boots so she can walk with me without getting sharp cactus burrs stuck between her toes.
This is a good place to rest and think… And hopefully to write. I wish all of us a healthy, prosperous, happy 2013.
